LinkedIn lists the most sought-after employers of 2012: Google, Apple, Microsoft, and Facebook

LinkedIn today released its 2012 list of Most InDemand Employers. The top four companies were all in the technology sector: Google, Apple, Microsoft, and Facebook. The results are based on what LinkedIn refers to as its “massive professional data set” of over 175 million users, as well as over 15 billion interactions between professionals and companies. LinkedIn says that 21 out of the top 100 companies were in the Technology & Software sector, the most popular sector. I’m not sure which companies LinkedIn is referring to exactly, or how “loose” its definition is for the technology industry, but here are the 21 that I … [Read more...]

Google Launches ‘Rebuilt’ Zagat App for Android

Google launched a Zagat app for Android on Thursday, which it says it rebuilt completely rather than keep elements of the Zagat app that pre-dated Google’s acquisition of the restaurant ratings publisher. The newly launched app is free, whereas the previous app cost $9.99, but users must have a Google+ account. Google acquired Zagat a little over a year ago in an effort to compete with online ratings providers like Yelp. Google searches for restaurants display Zagat ratings in the knowledge graph results. Zagat includes reviews for more than 30,000 eateries around the world, according to Google. Zagat’s apps for other formats will cease … [Read more...]

Google+ app adds controls for Pages, ‘Find People’ option for Android and iPhone 5 support for iOS

Google today updated its native Google+ app for both Android and iOS. You can download the latest release now from the official Google Play store and from the official Apple App Store. Both the Android version and the iOS version have received support for Google+ pages, meaning page owners can now view, post, and comment from their accounts using their mobile devices. This is a welcome addition and is of course critical if Google+ is to take on Facebook in the marketing world. After that feature, the two versions split off into opposite directions. While we can expect Google to pay more attention to Android, the company is by no means disregarding the … [Read more...]

In less than 24 hours, Google patches Chrome to plug security hole found at its Pwnium 2 event

Last night, Google held its Pwnium 2 competition at Hack in the Box 2012, offering up a total of $2 million for security holes found in Chrome. Only one was discovered; a young hacker who goes by the alias “Pinkie Pie” netted the highest reward level: a $60,000 cash prize and a free Chromebook. Google today patched the flaw and announced a new version of Chrome for Windows, Mac, and Linux. You can grab the latest release using the browser’s built-in silent updater, or you can download it directly from google.com/chrome. In its disclosure, the search giant confirmed the security flaw and reaffirmed the need for its Pwnium competition: … [Read more...]

Bing delivers five times more malicious sites than Google, says report

Malicious search results are a constant problem for search engines, and Google is a whole lot better at filtering them out than Bing. So says a report from German research firm AV-Test (PDF), which found that Bing served up five times as many malicious sites in search results than Google did over an 18-month period. Out of the 10 million search results delivered by both sites, Google served up 272 potentially nasty sites and Bing returned 1,285. The situation is somewhat funny given Microsoft’s constant attacks on Google’s search results, which Microsoft says are impartial and “Scroogle” customers. But while there’s a lot … [Read more...]

Big Data Can Help Prevent Conflicts

Big Data Can Help Prevent Conflicts

Some of the same social media analyses that have helped Google and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention spot warning signs of a flu outbreak could be used to detect the rumblings of violent conflict before it begins, scholars said in a paper released this week. Kenyan officials used essentially this system to track hate speech on Facebook, blogs and Twitter in advance of that nation’s 2013 presidential election, which brought Uhuru Kenyatta to power. Similar efforts to track Syrian social media have been able to identify ceasefire violations within 15 minutes of when they occur, according to the paper on New Technology and the … [Read more...]

Seeking EU Antitrust Deal, Google Offers to Brand Its Search Results

In its ongoing battle with the European Union over whether it unfairly prioritizes its own non-search products in search results, Google has offered to identify the results that relate to its own products, according to a Financial Times report. The European Union has charged that Google engages in anti-competitive practices by putting search results that point users to its products, such as Google+ profiles and posts or Google maps, at the top of search results pages. Under the proposal, Google would identify such results by labeling them with its brand, according to the Financial Times. Critics pointed out that the arrangement wouldn’t bar … [Read more...]

Foursquare Borrows $41M, Checks In As The Mayor Of Debt Town

Foursquare has checked in as the mayor of Debt Town today after announcing $41 million in loans from new and current investors. Which really puts the pressure on the company to generate real revenue as it shifts its focus away from simple social check-ins and tries to recoup lost ground in the battle over local search. No investors plunked down cash for new Foursquare shares. Instead, new investor Silver Lake Waterman led the financing with what other reports are calling a multiyear loan, while existing Foursquare investors — Andreessen Horowitz, O’Reilly AlphaTech Ventures, Spark Capital and Union Square Ventures — offered loans that will … [Read more...]
