Amazon Buys Goodreads to Make Reading Experience More Social

Amazon Buys Goodreads to Make Reading Experience More Social

Amazon announced Thursday that it will acquire Goodreads, the popular social network for books, for an undisclosed sum Goodreads launched in 2007 and currently has more than 16 million members. The service lets users share and review books they've read or want to read, as well as to keep track of what their friends are reading. In a statement, Amazon's VP of Kindle Content, Russ Grandinetti, said the two companies will work together "to build many new ways to delight readers and authors alike." The acquisition should provide some useful reading data to Amazon and help the ecommerce giant create more of a social reading experience around its Kindle … [Read more...]

Amazon acquires Goodreads, a book recommendations service

Amazon announced today it has acquired Goodreads, a website that gives you personalized recommendations for books. The terms of the deal weren’t disclosed, but Amazon revealed that the acquisition should close by the end of Q2 2013. This news comes a few months after ReadWrite reported that Goodreads “gave up” on Amazon, citing “restrictions.” Goodreads could not link to competing bookstores while using Amazon’s API. It’s likely that Amazon bought Goodreads to augment its Kindle product. However, the e-commerce giant acquired competing service Shelfari several years ago, and hasn’t done much with it. … [Read more...]

Amazon Acquires Social Reading Site Goodreads, Which Gives The Company A Social Advantage Over Apple

Today, Amazon has announced the acquisition of social reading service, Goodreads. Specific terms of the deal weren’t disclosed and it should close by the end of Q2. Goodreads had raised $2.75M in funding from the likes of True Ventures, since launching in January 2007. When we talked to them last August, the site had over 10M members and had catalogued more than 360M books, adding 22M each month. Now, the site boasts over 16M users. This type of social integration could give Amazon a major advantage over e-sellers like Apple, who have no social components to their product whatsoever. With people actually discussing and sharing the books that … [Read more...]

Penguin decides libraries can lend new ebooks again

In a move that’s sure to make readers very happy, publishing company Penguin has decided to reintroduce its newly released ebooks to public library lending programs. The notion of lending ebooks through libraries is still a very new concept, and one that still makes publishers nervous because of the possibility that sales would drop and piracy would run rampant. Last year Penguin decided to yank all its books from all library lending programs that used Overdrive, the lending platform used in conjunction with the Amazon Kindle library lending. Eventually, Penguin did bring a portion of ebooks back to the lending program, with the exception of new … [Read more...]

Years after launch, Playfirst’s games continue to thrive due to regular updates

Social mobile developer Playfirst is continuing to see a rise in user numbers and revenue for its core “Dash” games, something of a rarity in an industry where dwindling players result in titles being removed from the App Store less than a year after they launch. Playfirst VP of Marketing and Product Management Becky Ann Hughes tells us the company’s user base is continuing to see impressive growth due to the regular updates it provides to its games, especially seasonal content. Hughes tells us Playfirst has refocused itself to treat games as a service. “Every department is focused on games as a service development,” she … [Read more...]

Samsung’s looking to dump its e-ink company on Amazon (because e-reader sales stink)

E-readers are in a strange place right now. While the devices were once the bees knees of consumer electronics, they’ve since been eclipsed by the meteoric rise of LCD-based smartphones and tablets. Which is why it’s not a big surprise to hear that Samsung is looking to sell Liquavista, the E-ink company it purchased in 2011. Even more interesting is the potential buyer — Amazon, a company that could do a lot of interesting things with its own e-reader display unit. While Samsung hasn’t yet confirmed that its looking to sell Liquavista, it’s not a big surprise why it would want to dump the company. According to … [Read more...]

Vacation Disconnect Doesn’t Mean Leaving Your Devices Behind

Vacation Disconnect Doesn't Mean Leaving Your Devices Behind

When my husband and I were packing for our winter vacation, I marveled at all the tech devices that were lined up, waiting to be packed. This was supposed to be a "disconnected" vacation, in a country where our cellphones didn't even have service Yet on the table before me was my iPhone, my iPad, a Kindle, my husband's Nook, his iPad and his BlackBerry. Not very disconnected, is it? The fact is, these devices have become a part of our everyday lives, whether we're using them to communicate, read work email or just relax with a good book When I asked if we could scale back a little, my husband volunteered to leave his work BlackBerry behind. Good start, … [Read more...]

Send To Kindle: Amazon’s Land Grab For What’s Left Of Your Attention Span

Amazon's new "Send To Kindle" button is nothing original. Its functionality is exactly what we've already seen (and used) with apps like Instapaper and Pocket. But it's an important move for Amazon, which stands to benefit from capturing more of our fractured attention spans. The more we turn to Amazon for ebooks, games, videos, PDFs, etc. — and now any article on the Web — the more money Amazon can potentially make off of us. Of course, Amazon hopes we'll read and watch all those things on its Kindle hardware, whether a dedicated e-reader or a full-fledged tablet like the Fire. But Amazon knows not all of us will buy its devices, so it's also … [Read more...]

Amazon rolls out ‘Send to Kindle’ button for news sites & WordPress blogs

In what’s surely a win for lovers of long-form journalism (or needlessly long, rant-filled blog posts), Amazon has just rolled out a new “Send to Kindle” button for online publications to embed into their websites. Previously, to gain this kind of functionality you needed to install a browser plug-in to send articles or links to your Kindle device, which was a bit clunky at times but got the job done. Now all you need to do is click the “send to” button on the website to transfer over those articles — both to your Kindle devices or any of the Kindle Apps. Clicking the “Kindle” button on a website will … [Read more...]

Amazon’s assault on Apple’s iTunes empire continues today as the Seattle company released its Cloud Player app for iPad and iPad mini, adding to its existing app for iPhone and iPod touch. Amazon Puts Gay Twist on Long-Running Kindle Campaign

Amazon Puts Gay Twist on Long-Running Kindle Campaign

Amazon went back to the creative well for a new Kindle Paperwhite ad. As with previous Kindle ads, an attractive woman in a black bikini meets up with a clueless, iPad-toting guy who is jealous of her ability to read in harsh sunlight thanks to the Kindle's E-Ink technology. There's a twist in this latest ad, however. A same-sex couple shakes up the formula a bit, melting the former ice queen's heart somewhat. While switching up the formula may be one reason for the new ad's subject matter, it may go deeper than that. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is a supporter of same-sex marriage, who pledged $2.5 million to the cause when it came up on a ballot … [Read more...]
