eBay Looks Like Pinterest Now…Sort Of

Auction site eBay showed off a new layout today at the “Future of Shopping” event in New York City. From the look of it, it’s an e-commerce version of Pinterest, with big pictures and customizable feeds. The images are spread across the homepage, below the fold. Users can customize the results by logging in and “following” a few topics that they either choose from a list or select on their own. Users will also be able to follow other shoppers. The custom feed below is a sampling of the categories “moleskine notebooks,” “German musical steins,” “phone charger,” “Modcloth,” and … [Read more...]

Take a Bike Ride Through NYC Without Leaving Your Couch

If seasonal allergies have you avoiding the great outdoors this spring, you can actually enjoy a bike ride through New York City without stepping outside. Dutch startup Cyclodeo mashes together biking and video to create a digital resource for cycling enthusiasts and casual travelers alike. The startup has captured video of actual bike rides and synchronized it with GPS data for close to 150 kilometers (or about 93 miles) through New York City. On Cyclodeo's site, you can take a "ride" through Central Park or along the Hudson River Greenway. While you could visit Cyclodeo solely for a virtual bike ride, it's certainly a nifty resource if you're … [Read more...]

The Web Rallies for a Better World With Momentum1000 Campaign

In September 2000, leaders from around the world convened at the United Nations headquarters in New York City to adopt the Millennium Declaration, through which they committed their countries to a partnership in solving key global issues by the end of 2015. The leaders agreed on eight goals — known as the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) — that range from ending extreme poverty and hunger to reducing child mortality. Friday marks 1,000 days until the target date for reaching these goals. As a result, the U.N., the U.N. Foundation and other international organizations have initiated Momentum1000, a global 1,000-minute "digital media rally" … [Read more...]

Streaming TV startup Aereo has won a major court victory against TV networks that makes sure it can continue operating its service to bring network television to PCs, tablets, phones, and other devices. The United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit said today that it has rejected an appeal from TV networks who had said Aereo was infringing on various broadcasters’ copyrights. New York City-based Aereo offers the ability to watch and record TV shows and programs that you would normally get via an over-the-air TV antenna on smart devices. It has installed several dime-sized antennas in New York City and other areas that receive … [Read more...]

Gosling Easter Is Back With More Ryan Gosling-Themed Eggs In More Cities

Ryan Gosling might be taking a break from acting, but everyone's favorite brooding heartthrob is still willing to be New York City's best-looking Easter Bunny. Alright, so Gosling isn't actually the Easter Bunny — but Gosling-themed Easter eggs are currently being found around New York City, London, Chicago and San Francisco. It's all part of the second-annual Gosling Easter, an Easter egg hunt with a decidedly digital twist. Found it! Happy Easter to you, too @goslingeaster #HappyEaster twitter.com/writergirlinny… — Janelle (@writergirlinnyc) March 31, 2013 Gosling Easter started last year when advertising copywriter Jenna … [Read more...]

Inside Microsoft’s Big Launch Plans for Windows 8

Between now and July 2013, Microsoft expects 400 million people worldwide to be using Windows 8. And how will it get there? Popup stores, free Wi-Fi, and the sexy Surface tablet. Microsoft revealed Tuesday that it plans to open two new pop-up stores in high-profile locations; New York City’s Times Square, and the Shops at North Bridge in Chicago. At press time, that means that a total of 34 holiday stores will be set up and begin selling “curated” Microsoft products on Oct. 26, including in Atlanta, Denver, Las Vegas, San Francisco, St. Louis and Pittsburgh, to name just a few locations. Microsoft lists 28 permanent Microsoft … [Read more...]

Here’s Proof That Google Must Really Need More Google+ Local Reviews

Here's Proof That Google Must Really Need More Google+ Local Reviews

As Google tries to make Google+ a viable place to learn about local businesses, it seems to be having trouble getting enough reviews of local businesses. At least in New York City, anyway. Google+ Local Needs Reviews? That's the only explanation I could come up with for the awkward, uncomfortable and bizarre Google+ Lounge on the second floor of the posh Time Warner Center on Columbus Circle just off Central Park. The Google+ Local Lounge, which is just a half-heartedly cordorned-off area of the second-floor lobby, has some card tables, some folding chairs, some brightly colored stools, a few Chromebooks and a handful of preternaturally … [Read more...]

Google Maps Adds Real-Time Public Transit Info

Google Maps Adds Real-Time Public Transit Info

Good news, New York City-based commuters: Google Maps added Wednesday real-time subway departure times for the seven lines that have such data available. These include the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and Times Square - Grand Central shuttle. The Metropolitan Transit Authority's other lines require an expensive overhaul before they'll be able to provide real-time data. Metrorail riders in Washington, D.C., will also now receive up-to-the-second service alerts via Google Maps. That'll be handy for capitol denizens, who will be able to use the app to find routes that avoid any unplanned delays or schedule changes. … [Read more...]

iPhone 5 on T-Mobile LTE keeps up with AT&T and Verizon (video)

T-Mobile is finally getting the iPhone next month — and it looks like the beleaguered carrier’s customers can expect speeds similar to the competition. In my brief testing of T-Mobile’s iPhone 5 at its New York City press event today, I saw a download speed of around 16 megabits per second and an upload speed of 7.4 Mbps. That’s typical real-world speed for both AT&T and Verizon’s LTE networks, and it’s slightly faster from what I’ve seen of T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network (its fastest network so far). T-Mobile’s LTE network certainly has the potential to be faster — earlier benchmarks on the same … [Read more...]

T-Mobile’s iPhone 5 finally arrives April 12 for $99 down

The T-Mobile iPhone is real, and it’s here. T-Mobile’s version of the iPhone 5 will land on April 12th, the carrier revealed today during its ‘uncarrier’ press event in New York City (which we’re following live). While T-Mobile is doing away with phone subsidies, that doesn’t mean hopeful iPhone 5 owners have to pay for the whole phone upfront. Instead, customers can pay $99 initially and pay for the rest of the phone in $20 payments over the following twenty months. T-Mobile’s angle here is pretty clear. “You love your iPhone, you hate AT&T. I want you to get used to that tone, because that is how … [Read more...]

iPhone 5 Comes to T-Mobile April 12

T-Mobile is finally getting the iPhone 5— the last major carrier to do so. The company announced during a press event in New York City on Tuesday the iPhone 5 is finally coming to T-Mobile, for a $99.99 down payment and $20 for each month (for 24 months). Although it will be available without a contract, customers can subscribe to its LTE network. Meanwhile, the iPhone 4 can be purchased for a down payment of $14.99 and $15 each month for 24 months. Financing is also available. T-Mobile's iPhone is technically a new model. It has the exact same design, but with additional radios (it connects to T-Mobile's HSPA+ 42 and LTE, both in AWS spectrum). … [Read more...]
