Online PR for Brands: How to Make Company News, Real News

Most companies understand the benefits of a well-executed online PR strategy: improved brand visibility and industry reputation, increased traffic to the company website and even sales. It’s no wonder that companies trip over themselves to come up with a regular stream of PR related content. Unfortunately, lower barriers to entry for publishing and distributing information have resulted in a plethora of non-news littering the web. Is there any harm in “putting it all out there,” as in writing and distributing a press release for every event, newsworthy or not? I’d argue that yes, there is potential harm. As an industry … [Read more...]

Google’s Patent Pledge Covers Its Own Ass

Google's pledge to back open patents is a typically Google gesture: an elegant combination of genuine altruism, PR spin and protecting its own self-interests. Thursday morning, Google outlined the Open Patent Non-Assertion Pledge, which boils down to one statement: "we pledge not to sue any user, distributor or developer of open-source software on specified patents, unless first attacked," the company said. Google said that it would place ten patents under the aegis of the OPN, all tied to MapReduce and designed to minimize the computing power of large data sets. Google has previously made those technologies available to developers; the most … [Read more...]

Your career, future-proofed

The world economies stand at a crossroads. Industries that once were dominant are long in decline. Spurred by tectonic technological shifts, nascent sectors (think digital, data and everything automated) are ascendant and will likely shape everything that lies ahead, including your career and opportunities. With every career move, I have been positioned in new geographies or industries that were primed for growth. This has taken me around the globe and the digital world. When I’m feeling omniscient, I like to believe that can be chalked up to more than just sheer luck: Perhaps there’s something within that gives me the foresight to anticipate where … [Read more...]

The Pramana Collective: New Tech PR Firm Made Up of Old PR Hands

The Pramana Collective: New Tech PR Firm Made Up of Old PR Hands

A trio of high-profile tech communications execs from Twitter (Sean Garrett), Facebook (Brandee Barker), and Skype (Brian O’Shaughnessy), have joined forces to create a new firm called the Pramana Collective. While PR types don’t usually get a lot of the attention, the joining of these three top Silicon Valley players is enough of a news event to warrant some mention. (If only to try to figure out a good joke to make about its name, which sounds like a line of skin care products at a spa you can’t afford. I do like to amuse myself.) Actually, according to a blog post from Garrett, which is below, Pramana is “the means by which … [Read more...]

Although it’s possibly the least pleasant topic on his mind at the moment, he willingly started our interview with a discussion about RapGenius, a Y Combinator company accusing Heroku of gross technical negligence and knowingly overcharging its users. RapGenius has been raising hell about this issue, emailing journalists, posting around the web, and intimating that Heroku owes its customers millions in reparations. Heroku, a … [Read more...]

Madonna Already Stirring Up Trouble for Instagram

Madonna Already Stirring Up Trouble for Instagram

Madonna on Instagram Just a few weeks after launching a profile on Instagram, Madonna has already been warned that her account may be shut down for failing to adhere to community guidelines. But it’s not what you think. Yes, the superstar has posted suggestive photos of her cleavage and bodysuit-clad bottom. But those photos don’t (quite) violate Instagram’s ban on nudity. The offending photo was a photograph of a Man Ray photograph of his topless lover, according to an account on the fan site Madonnarama. The photo was quickly removed and Instagram sent the pop goddess a warning, which she promptly posted. “Hello Madonna, It … [Read more...]
