Facebook Asks You To Please Select Your Emotion

It could make us more willing to express how we feel. Or you could say it over-simplies our complex moods and lives. But today the Facebook status update box began offering the option to “share how you’re feeling or what you’re doing” through a drop-down menu of emoticons and media. We’re entering a more structured era of communication, where both friends and big data know exactly how we tick. Facebook began testing the new sharing options in January, but only released screenshots to the press. Now it appears they’ve been widely given to much wider audience. It’s likely the beginning of a global or at least US … [Read more...]

Wi-Fi Above 10,000 Feet: Which Airlines Provide Best Connection?

Once upon a time, air travel was just about the only time I could escape the Internet. Now with in-flight Wi-Fi becoming more pervasive, even air travel has become a time to check Twitter, respond to emails and keep up with Arsenal's latest loss. I nearly always fly Delta, which has Wi-Fi on virtually every flight. But for those who fly other airlines, here's a quick review of which airlines lead and which lag in providing in-flight Wi-Fi. As of September 2012, only 31% of US domestic flights came equipped with in-flight Wi-Fi, nearly always through GoGo Internet, though there are other options. Then, as now, Delta led the pack, but now everyone, … [Read more...]

The Pirate Bay Moves Servers to the U.S., Becomes Freedom Bay

After trying its luck to North Korea, the world's largest BitTorrent tracker, The Pirate Bay, has announced it has moved its servers to the U.S. "We have worked closely with the awesome american government to establish a strong military graded server park that will endure any nuclear attacks that Kim Jong Un and his evil allies will send at US," writes The Pirate Bay in a blog post. This news, which comes on a very significant date, also means some changes in the way The Pirate Bay operates. The site says it will remove all torrents from certain countries, and seed American torrents with "extra power." Read more...More about The Pirate Bay, Tech, and … [Read more...]

Online gambling in the US: it's pretty much inevitable (Facebook)

Hear that whooshing sound? It’s the sound of something rushing in to fill a vacuum – except that the “something” in this case is social and mobile gaming companies, and the vacuum is the market for real money gambling games in the Unites States. … [Read more...]

Rocket-backed social gifting startup DropGifts takes the B2B route to the US

Rocket-backed social gifting startup DropGifts takes the B2B route to the US

Rocket Internet-incubated DropGifts is often referred to as a clone of Swedish social gifting startup Wrapp, and there’s something to be said for that. But today, the fledgling company is announcing its debut in the United States, with a twist that it hopes will set it apart from Wrapp. DropGifts is today launching a B2B solution for the US market only, after ‘months of activity in the B2C sector’. Billed as an expansion of its business model, the startup will allow retail customers to optimize reach in sampling and gifting campaigns through their social media applications. DropGifts says it has developed a range of services around … [Read more...]

Social media engagement for US and UK TV watchers falls to 23-24%: Report

Social media engagement for US and UK TV watchers falls to 23-24%: Report

Social media may be on the rise as millions of users flock to Facebook and Twitter, but in the US and UK, active use of social services to discuss a show while watching TV is on the decline, falling to 23% and 24%, respectively, in 2012, according to a new report from Motorola Mobility. The figures come from Motorola’s Home division, which released its fourth Media Engagement Barometer on Tuesday, tracking 9,500 consumers across 17 markets. The US and UK posted lower numbers for simultaneous social engagement while watching TV than the global average of 43%. The two countries have seen a sizable drop in engagement over the past couple years. In … [Read more...]

A lot can be learnt from Facebook’s activities when it comes to hiring new developers and some recent news landed on our desk from Vancouver Sun, which points to problems with the US immigration policy. Facebook’s new temporary dev office in Vancouver underscores how broken US immigration policy remains

Facebook’s new temporary dev office in Vancouver underscores how broken US immigration policy remains

According to the Vancouver Sun, Facebook will hire up to 150 developers for a new temporary office in the city. The hires will be freshly graduated engineering students. Facebook, a massive technology company, remains hungry for new talent to help it expand and support its products. Why Vancouver? As the Sun notes, the city “is a logical choice for the office because it’s relatively close to Facebook’s engineering office in Seattle.” But, even more, the office belies a key point: It is planned for a one year period, which is essentially how long it takes to snag the needed permit to work in the United States, if you are a high-skilled … [Read more...]

Petition to save Google Reader passes 100,000 signatures, but don’t expect Google to reverse its decision

Petition to save Google Reader passes 100,000 signatures, but don’t expect Google to reverse its decision

It’s been less than two days since Google announced plans to kill off Google Reader on July 1st, and already a petition to save it has hit a notable milestone. While other petitions have received anywhere from 2,000 to 30,000 signatures, this one on Change.org has passed the 100,000 mark. Unlike White House petitions, which require the US government to issue a response when 100,000 Americans sign, a Change.org appeal does not mandate the party being lobbied to respond when it hits a certain figure. In fact, while tracking this particular petition we noted that it had a moving target that changed steadily as the number of signatures grew: first … [Read more...]

British Serious Fraud Office faces an awkward hurdle in its Autonomy investigation

The British Serious Fraud Office (SFO), which is said to be investigating Autonomy on charges of fraud, is also an Autonomy customer. Awkward. SFO uses Autonomy’s Introspect software to search through voice calls and emails for relevant information. According to the New York Times, the authorities are in the process of determining whether this is a conflict of interest, which may hold up the investigation. Autonomy is being investigated for allegations that it misrepresented its sales and accounting prior to the $11.1 billion sale to Hewlett-Packard. Autonomy CEO Mike Lynch (pictured, above) has spoken out to deny the charges of accounting … [Read more...]

China to US: Let’s Talk About Cybersecurity

China to US: Let's Talk About Cybersecurity

China's Foreign Ministry said Tuesday it's open to a dialogue on cybersecurity with the United States a day after a White House official for the first time publicly accused Chinese actors of being involved in digital intrusions against American entities. "China is willing, on the basis of the principles of mutual respect and mutual trust, to have constructive dialogue and cooperation on this issue with the international community including the United States to maintain the security, openness and peace of the Internet," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chuying was quoted by Reuters as saying during a briefing. … [Read more...]
